It’s hard to imagine how this might have turned out with less capable leads or a directorial sensibility less compassionate than Demme’s, but we can be damn sure it wouldn’t have won more Oscars. Superbly crafted suspense, anchored by dimensional and fascinating characters and delivered with nuance and style.
