Together, Gilroy and Gyllenhaal have a gift for bringing forth truly unique and compelling characters. In this case, the backdrop has so much going on (and pulling in opposite directions) that it becomes a bit distracting. It’s a complex and visionary film—and it’s truly fun watching Gyllenhaal—but the elements fail to cohere into a satisfying whole.
