Having been warned off of all versions other than Garrett Gilchrist’s painstakingly restored, unofficial “Recobbled Cut”, I missed out on Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Beals, and all the musical numbers. And happily so. Seen (nearly) as its creator intended, it’s a marvel of animation artistry, with touching characters and a wonderful heart. There's not much focus on story, but its dazzling visuals, Escherian architecture, and Rube Goldberg mechanics—all accomplished without computers—are something to behold.
