The characters and dialogue are surprisingly flat, with Kathy Bates bringing her usual brassy spark, but little life from anyone else. Spending so much time with Costner and Harrelson, you’d expect some character development, but all that emerges is “old, tired, and fussy.” The narrative momentum lags, and the perspective is inconsistent. The film is great at evoking a serious and thoughtful mood, but rarely delivers on it.
