Miller turns in fantastic work, and the intriguing behind-the-scenes world is filled with dazzling color and costumes. It’s truly horrible what Hedren went through, but the film does itself few favors in its structure and pacing—laden with foreboding music and editing, skipping over nearly every moment that isn’t an assault, giving short shrift to the moments that clarify why she couldn’t just walk away. Seems like HBO could have been more successful with it as a 6-episode miniseries.
