Arliss Howard was not meant to play lead roles. Martha Coolidge was not meant to direct cop movies, and Scott Frank was not destined to write comedies. Luckily, all of this got figured out and this bizarrely flat mishmash of styles and story elements remains as the only evidence of such an ill-conceived attempt.
