The Girl elided the production of this film into a series of domineering sexual advances and very little else, and left me wondering “did Hitch just forget about making a movie and spend all his time torturing this woman?” Apparently, yes. There’s no story here; the psychological narrative is over-written and over-acted; Hedren and Connery have the same basic argument several times with no resolution. His romantic feelings are never remotely justified, and her performance is flat, screechy, and bland (though she has a valid excuse). Crackling chemistry between Connery and Diane Baker recalls the sort of thing you usually see in a Hitchcock movie; this only serves to highlight the awfulness of Marnie by contrast.
