A staggering and spectacular logistical achievement, with a strong momentum driving the story and keeping all of its subplots clear. The colossal cast does a respectable job of building character with very limited screen time, and the decision to present foreign-language dialogue with subtitles is a welcome surprise—in fact, the film leans on American exceptionalism far less than I’d have expected.
