The point of this film is kind of facile and unimaginative, but the MacGuffin makes for great visuals (it’s almost literally a progress bar that fills in throughout the movie) and interesting semi-coherent tech-speak. It’s overwrought at times, and the ending is just dull, but the visuals are engaging and Eisenberg turns in one of his least objectionable performances in years (due in large part to being matched with a character that suits his strengths). Hayek is impressive in a role unlike her usual characters.
