Elmer Bernstein's score is terrific, and it's a unique and energetic turn from Bening. Cusack and Huston are also great, of course. The pacing is a little uneven—the languid scenes fit the material better, but every so often it lurches forward. That's probably why it feels a bit unsatisfying overall, even though the script and direction are otherwise excellent.
