Wyler continues to evoke performances with a strikingly natural cadence compared to other films of the era, and sustains taut suspense throughout a hostage situation that is at times almost comically meandering—it’s like the hostages are working in shifts! It strains credibility once or twice, but at its best it’s reminiscent of the tragic cause-and-effect in A Simple Plan or Breaking Bad.
