Has a feeling of Woody Allen in his prime—the crosstalk, the environments, the unflinching character examinations. Hoffman does excellent work building a character you can’t love but can’t look away from. Emma Thompson is spectacular. Baumbach captures a lot of honesty in scenes where it would be tempting to make a hackier choice.
