I wasn’t sure at first, because it leaned on some very familiar tropes from smaller, intimate films these days—minimalist score, bleak palette, frequent mini-montages of still-life shots—but perhaps that was its genius. It lulled me into a sense of the mundane ordinariness of this friendship, leaving me completely unprepared for the emotional punch. (No small feat, since they tell you in the first two minutes exactly what’s going to happen.) Romano is revealing some serious dramatic chops.
