There’s a clever premise at the core of this, but the story is spread too thin over too many elements, resulting in goofy shortcuts, frequent interruptions to the life-or-death momentum, and a bafflingly uneven tone. A deep cast puts their best into it (Macy is great, as usual), but isn’t working with top-shelf material.
