Stirring performances from Carell and Chalamet which stretch for—but don’t quite grasp—the emotional connection necessary to overcome how exasperating the story is. As a rhapsody on the role of unconditional love in parenting, it has some great moments; for me, it fell short as a satisfying narrative.
