Hoffman delivers a sympathetic, engaging performance—always under strain, but keeping it under wraps—and the domestic scenes with the kid are fantastic. The conclusion is a little weak, and Streep is left off-screen for far too long. It’s only thanks to her exemplary work that the character comes off as anything more than a flighty harpy (which would have ruined the film).
