Eric Heisserer crafted a truly excellent adaptation to Malerman’s inventive but unfocused novel, and then…something happened. My gut tells me Bullock pushed changes to emphasize her character’s strength and grit, but—whatever it was—it sapped the strength and clarity of the story and rushed through the interesting parts. I like her (more than most, probably) but she’s miscast here.
