Almodóvar’s trademark color and playfulness are engaging, and the unique story idea is full of bizarre potential. Unfortunately, the madcap comic energy and playful sexuality from the beginning kind of fade away for most of the film. The tone (and the characters’ motivations) shift all over the place, making it hard to know what to root for.
