A very strong directorial debut for Mann, whose editing and vérité camerawork communicate well without dialogue. The story is at times unfocused, attempting to round out Caan’s character with some relationship elements but failing to follow through. It’s especially unfortunate for Weld, who delivers a fantastic performance across a range of demanding scenes. The music is atrocious, even for 1981, at times drowning out the dialogue.
