Scott Frank writes crime stories and characters as smoothly as anyone, and really cast this film well. Daniels in particular sparkles in a supporting role. The direction is superb, working with his lean dialogue to establish an effective tone, and the satisfying, clever finish redeems a few lulls in the middle.
