It’s episodic and overlong, but Pfeiffer and De Niro turn in unique and energetic performances, and there’s something charming about a fantasy movie that recalls a time before the epic Twilight-Potter-Rings franchise market, even if its sincerest scenes are undermined by music and editing that sacrifices their subtlety in an attempt to make every! Moment! Grandiose!
