Leigh achieves a rare feat by creating characters who are a joy to watch even though they aren’t really compelling, which enables story to take a back seat. The performances are amazing (Steadman in particular), and portray a very real and sympathetic family. It takes a sharp turn from whimsical to challenging—that could’ve been handled better, but by then I was so invested in the characters, I just went with it.
