It helped to read Ebert’s rave on this one, because the context of Rohmer’s “Moral Tales” illuminated some of the subtlety that wasn’t coming through—due to the relaxed performance style, the language barrier, or who-knows-what. There’s a passably interesting moral story here, but it’s hard to root for a pair of adults conspiring to meddle in the romantic lives of teenage girls, and despite some smart directorial choices, it’s dragged down by choppy structure, inconsistent camerawork, and a total absence of chemistry between Brialy and Cornu.
