There are elements of this chilling and disturbing story that feel dated, but sadly the underlying dynamic remains quite relevant. Bergman is sensational, especially in subtle moments where many of her contemporaries might have failed to keep Paula’s madness believable. She is simply riveting, though Lansbury manages to steal every scene she’s in with a haughty smirk.
