Hoffman’s energy is tremendous, and the thrust of the story is relevant and stirring. Fosse’s directorial hand is a little less steady; he creates a rich, lived-in world with great characters, but the editing and composition often veer into moody tangents that don’t fit together. That unbroken take of Hoffman on stage at the end, though—wow.
