It isn’t perfect—the villain motivation is weak, and every minute spent on politics would’ve been better spent on the family dynamic—but the story still has plenty of room for a worthy follow-up to the best film ever made, and Bird takes advantage of the dozen years’ worth of technological progress to deliver dazzling action and cinematography that’s like a hug to your eyeballs.
