A Futile and Stupid Gesture

It’s a fun cast and the unique narrative devices are a fresh way to compress a lot of material…at first. Before long the cutesy fourth-wall stuff, along with the fact that everyone talks exclusively in one-liners, creates so much ironic distance that nothing at all seems sincere. And it surprises me that Wain of all people would fall into the biopic trap of wedging a “Rosebud” awkwardly into this story.
