Jones is perfectly cast, and Redmayne does quite a job, capturing charm in a physical performance that leaves little room for expressivity. There’s a sense of quite a bit of sugar-coating, and some showy visual choices I’d have avoided, but it’s quite a stirring profile. There’s a small moment when Stephen and Jane are having a conversation about their relationship and his unique voice, normally associated with lectures and interviews, is instead expressing longing and sorrow. It’s brief, but very moving; it puts the reality of Hawking’s life into a totally new context, and that’s just what a good biography should do.
