Many things don’t make sense in this movie: why do the lead roommates suddenly become so competitive, and why does their rivalry fluctuate wildly between harmless pranks and near-manslaughter? Why are the few moments of madcap hilarity used as an opportunity to ditch out of scenes early, rather than elevate the comedic energy of the lulls in between? Why is the first act so long, when we know exactly where it’s going? But, most importantly, why was William H. Macy involved in this at any level, especially as director?
