Joyous and heartbreaking at the same time, but amazingly the childish joy is what makes the reality so heartbreaking. It evokes a place and a lifestyle with ingenious precision, and it pulls you in with vivid characters, a unique perspective, and a shiny visual style—even though it’s hard to get excited about rewatching it any time soon. Dafoe deserves all the praise he’s been getting.
