Del Toro’s stories have suffered from too much fantasy (Pan’s Labyrinth) or lost focus amid intricate, thoughtful world-building (Hellboy and its sequel). Here, everything finally comes together: a touching sensibility, a beautiful visual style, and a winning story. Hawkins and Jenkins deliver superb work, and Spencer and Stuhlbarg are also fantastic. With Michael Shannon, you never have to wonder what you’re going to get; it’s always exactly what’s on the tin. This part matches his style more perfectly than usual.
