The series is suffering from a serious overload of characters, making for a denser story than it's really fun to follow—and sadly, Kylo Ren's story is so uninteresting yet destined to get a huge chunk of screen time. Nevertheless, it's a joy to watch new filmmakers exploring and expanding the established visual language of Star Wars, and Johnson contributes a handful of scenes with real emotional resonance.

This was considerably easier to rewatch than I’d been anticipating. Sure, there are too many final battles, and Serkis hugely overacts (but I suppose he has to, or why would they need him?). Still, the opening battle always moves me, and the rest is pretty great ...but MY GOD the entire casino-planet interlude is just a misfire on every level. It could easily lift out, too. So sad.
