Demme’s trademark ability to reveal the personal, human side of a story keeps this “message picture” from ever becoming inaccessible. Astonishing performances from a deep cast elevate it to a classic—not easy to rewatch, but very moving and powerful. Some of the most impactful moments are Joanne Woodward being completely silent.
