Sophia Lillis is a force of wit and sparkle, and most of the other kids turn in pretty great performances. While condensing was inevitable, many departures from King’s story are really hard to explain, especially when the adult chapter is still to come. The result is visually impressive but feels rushed, and fails to transition smoothly between the remaining elements of King’s themes and those parts that have been recast as standard creature feature jump-scares.
