Nolan does a fantastic job of immersing the viewer in the story at eye-level, which makes it far more resonant than a grand overview might have been. Keeping the lead character nameless and faceless (in a literal sea of identical blokes) was probably a choice in that same direction, but it's a bit of a misfire since it adds extra confusion in moments that are already chaotic. Still, a visceral visual spectacle.
