Cranston is excellent in a mostly solo performance, studying a deeply flawed character coming face-to-face with his obsessive personality in what amounts to the weirdest possible variation on It’s a Wonderful Life. The story idea is intriguing, and might have felt preposterous if not for the brilliant and sensitive directing choices.
