Soderbergh can be witty and breezy, and he can also be so goddamn infuriating. Here, he’s attracted a great supporting cast, but his leading lady’s flat, unnatural delivery sucks all life out of their performances. The script seems like it wants to be building suspense, but it’s just a mishmash of disconnected suspense and intrigue tropes from other films, and the editing and camerawork sap all of its energy. The sets and lighting look cheap, the lens choices are weird—it’s just a misfire on every level.
