The script is a mess, the racism and misogyny are striking even for 1975, and Eastwood's performance is pure garbage, but his decision not to fake any of the mountain climbing footage pays off—remarkable shots and scenery. George Kennedy delivers a dynamic, engaging performance, which further spotlights Eastwood's flat and disinterested delivery. (There's a fair amount of repartee in Eastwood's dialogue, but his scenes play like his co-stars trading witty barbs with a Speak & Spell.)
