The concept raises some interesting ideas that are worth exploring, but it’s difficult to be incisive when you're this unsubtle. Playing Hanks against type would be a savvy gamble, but he'd have to be believable as a good guy first, and this film’s incessantly foreboding tone undercuts its characters, its message, and any shock value in its escalating plot.
