There’s some beautiful cinematography, but it’s really hard for me to understand the acclaim this one got. It’s weirdly distant (though most Peter Weir films are—at least those without an energetic Jim Carrey performance to pierce the stiltedness), which contributed to my confusion as to what it was meant to say or what we were meant to feel. The wails of Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute, didn’t help either.
