The dialogue and plot are handled well, and there’s good chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Hathaway, who turn in fine performances with some unexpectedly revealing sex scenes. But the tone is wildly inconsistent, with the broad comedy undercutting the sincere romance—it feels like the film is working up to a big statement, but never quite delivers.
