Maintains the series’s spectacular, over-the-top design and crazy schemes and gadgets, with another fine boost from Kristen Wiig. Tries to run too many storylines at once, though, and takes a long time to get going after a fun and flashy intro. In Gru’s world, motivation almost never matters—so why spend 20 minutes of clunky exposition on it?
