An Unmarried Woman

Clayburgh, unbridled and fearless, holds the screen in a way few actors can—with the additional challenge of showcasing Erica’s independence and vulnerability (sometimes together, often in struggle with one another). The script, the editing, and even the camera have a charming and freewheeling lack of rhythm which—in concert with the unvarnished performances—creates a sense of intimacy and realism. It’s a unique, arresting character profile. (Bill Conti's score barges in much too forcefully and frequently, but assumably that was the style at the time.)
