Taken on their own, the scenes and characters are written with the heart and skill you’d expect from Tom McCarthy. It's a clever idea, but it doesn't seem like the perfect story through which to explore it. It becomes a constant struggle to nail down the tone—first it’s like Click, then like Prelude to a Kiss, then a little Miller's Crossing with a dash of Get Shorty, then (astonishingly) Spy Kids. There are flashes of brilliance, but on the whole it's no more satisfying than the last time all those elements were blended together: Baby’s Day Out.
