The characters are so tenderly, deftly crafted; the scenario (while absurdly supernatural) is potent with possibilities; and then... the script seems to lose track of what it had meant to do, so it runs out the clock.
It's not like we were hurting for body-switching movies at the time, but it's nice to have scientific proof that a scraggly old man cannot reproduce the Meg Ryan chemistry. And it's amazing to realize how many different kinds of movies Alec Baldwin has been in. Devise a workable story and clean up the way everyone talks like a playwright if they speak for more than three lines at a time and this could really have been something!
