I consider this film a classic, and hold it up as my example of a film that’s a “pure comedy,” undiluted by romance, action, or any other genre (as fewer and fewer comedies are). Steve’s slow burn is magnificent, and Candy is utterly flawless. Sincere and funny, throughout—balancing Del on a tipping point of obnoxiousness. The pacing is at times languid by today’s standards, creating some lulls between the set pieces; and that dance-club end credits track belongs high on the list of unforgivable atrocities committed by the 1980s against the art of cinema.
