Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence on the move to ABC Some interesting dish. My favorite question: "Will it still be a comedy?"

He's certainly saying the right things, but I'll believe it when I see it. For now, I'm cautiously optimistic.

I, for one, will believe it when you tell me about it. I quit "seeing it" a few weeks ago, with no regrets so far.

Brandon (that's you!) has posted a link to a new interview with Lawrence about the show's resuscitation on ABC. No real new information, but it's interesting how much angrier his tone is. (I wouldn't have thought it could get any angrier!)
My sense originally was that Scrubs and NBC were happy friends for a few years, and then the network started to cool on the show (slightly before the writing caused me to cool as well; not sure if that's coincidence or not). Now, Lawrence makes it sound like NBC was openly hostile to the show from day one, and his interviewer unnecessarily comments that the show "was treated like a leper." If that's true, why did NBC air the show for seven seasons? It was never a true ratings hit – they just love losing money? They couldn't come up with anything better to put in prime time until some genius suggested five hours of Leno a week?
In previous seasons, Lawrence was a little merrier about the show (he was also still employed at NBC, which accounts for some of the difference). None of this explains why I'm fascinated enough to do hours of reading on the background of a show I only really liked for about two or three seasons – maybe it's that refreshing sense of honesty you so rarely get from Hollywood types on the record.

I gotta say, two episodes in, Lawrence is backing up everything he said. The broad, unrealistic silliness of the last 2-3 seasons is gone, and the character-based comedy/drama mix is back. The second episode in particular was some of the strongest work they've done in quite some time.
